Common Eye Conditions

There are a wide variety of eye conditions. Each one affects vision in a unique way, requiring that the built environment be adapted to a multitude of specific needs. As a general rule, people with limited central vision have more difficulty reading signs and interpreting traffic lights than navigating the built environment. Those who have limited peripheral vision but good central vision may be able to read (e.g., signage) but may experience more difficulty navigating through a space.

Most people impacted by blindness (nine out of ten) are not completely “blind” but have some level of vision – from light perception to some degree of partial, usable sight. People impacted by blindness typically learn to maximize their remaining sight when they are navigating the built environment.
